Where is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Located in Uganda?

Are you planning to visit Uganda for a memorable gorilla trekking experience and wondering where Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located? Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is situated in southwestern Uganda, sharing borders with the districts of Kanungu, Rubanda and Kisoro. The park also lies near the Uganda-DR Congo border. Renowned as one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically diverse forests, Bwindi is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a prime destination for gorilla trekking enthusiasts.

Why Visit Bwindi for Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows you to walk through lush forests, following trails to meet habituated mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Once you locate a gorilla family, you’ll spend a magical one-hour encounter observing their behavior, taking photographs and learning about these magnificent creatures that share 95% of their DNA with humans. Unlike many animals that can survive in zoos, mountain gorillas thrive only in their natural environments, making Bwindi a must-visit destination for anyone hoping to see them.

Key Features of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

• Four Gorilla Trekking Sectors: Bwindi is divided into four main sectors—Buhoma and Ruhija in the north and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south. Each sector offers unique experiences but guarantees the same unforgettable trek.
• UNESCO World Heritage Site: Bwindi’s rich biodiversity earned it recognition as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, highlighting its global importance for conservation.
• 18 Habituated Gorilla Families: Bwindi is home to 18 habituated gorilla families, each allowing a maximum of eight visitors per day. This ensures an intimate and sustainable trekking experience.
• High Gorilla Sighting Success: With a 98% chance of seeing gorillas, Bwindi is one of the best places in the world to encounter these endangered apes.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: What to Expect on Your Adventure

Your gorilla trekking adventure begins early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, with a briefing at the park headquarters. During the briefing, you’ll learn the dos and don’ts of trekking and interacting with gorillas. Experienced guides and trackers will then lead you through the forest to locate a gorilla family. Once you find them, you’ll have one hour to observe, photograph and enjoy their company before returning to the starting point, where you’ll receive a certificate to commemorate your trek.

To ensure the safety and conservation of gorillas, trekking is restricted to individuals aged 15 years and above. Bwindi’s trekking guidelines are designed to protect both visitors and the gorillas, making the experience safe and enjoyable.

Gorilla trekking permits in Bwindi are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and cost:

• $800 USD for Non-Foreign Residents
• $700 USD for Foreign Residents

With limited permits available each day, it’s advisable to book your permits well in advance, especially during peak seasons (January, February, June, July, August, September and December).

Best Time to Visit Bwindi for Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi’s tropical climate means it can rain at any time of the year. However, the drier months—January, February, June, July, August and early September—are considered the best for trekking as trails are less slippery. That said, the rainy season also has its perks, as gorillas are often easier to spot due to the abundance of food.
