Gorilla Trekking Tour from South Sudan Border

Gorilla Trekking Tour from South Sudan Border: Your Ultimate Guide

Planning a gorilla trekking trip from the South Sudan border? Whether you’re based in South Sudan and looking to start your adventure via the Elegu or Nimule border post or you’re visiting Uganda for the first time, Trek Africa Gorillas is here to help you organize your gorilla trek with ease.

Gorilla trekking in Africa is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It draws countless travelers to witness the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Despite the challenges—such as high costs, the physical exertion of hiking and the unpredictable weather—gorilla trekking remains one of the most memorable wildlife experiences you can have during your African safari.

What to Expect on a Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, often navigating steep and muddy terrain, crossing rivers and maneuvering through thick vegetation in search of these endangered creatures. It’s a physically demanding activity, so you should be in good physical shape.

During your trek, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour with the gorillas, observing them in their natural environment. If you want to spend more time with the gorillas, consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest, which gives you four hours to interact with the gorillas.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking from South Sudan Border

From the South Sudan border, your gorilla trekking adventure can begin in Uganda, Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo. These countries are home to the only remaining mountain gorillas and there are four main national parks where you can trek:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park.
• DR Congo: Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas).

To trek in these parks, you’ll need a gorilla permit. Gorilla permits are in high demand, especially during the peak trekking season from June to September, so it’s essential to book your trip early—ideally, 5 months in advance.

Gorilla Permit Costs in Uganda

In Uganda, gorilla permits are priced as follows:

• $800 per person for foreign non-residents.
• $700 per person for residents.
• $80 per person for East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and South Sudan).

These permits give you access to one hour of gorilla viewing in either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla families (16 in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga), so there are 136 permits available daily.

For those wanting a longer experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience (available only in Bwindi) lets you spend 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas. The cost for this experience is $1500 per person.

You can book your gorilla permits directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or with a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Age Restrictions and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking

To participate in gorilla trekking, you must be at least 15 years old. There is no strict maximum age limit but your physical fitness will be considered, especially for older trekkers. For those with limited mobility, sedan chair carriers are available in Bwindi Forest to help you reach the trekking areas. The chairs are carried by porters and prices range from $400–$500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy

A gorilla permit is required to go trekking. However, if you are unable to attend your trek, the cancellation policy is strict. There are no refunds if you cancel your permit within 8 days of the trek.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking from the South Sudan Border

Gorilla trekking from the South Sudan border is possible throughout the year but the ideal time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking is during the drier months of January, February and June to early September. During these months, travel to the parks is easier and the visibility of the gorillas is better due to reduced vegetation growth.

Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

When preparing for your gorilla trekking adventure, it’s essential to pack appropriately for the conditions. The terrain can be muddy, especially during the rainy season and there are steep, challenging paths in the forest. Here’s a list of recommended items to bring for a successful trek:

• Insect Repellent – To protect yourself from bites
• Torch/Flashlight (with spare batteries)
• Wet Wipes – To freshen up during the trek
• Water Bottle – Stay hydrated
• Camera & Lenses – Capture your unforgettable moments
• Comfortable Walking Boots – Hiking boots or sturdy shoes with good grip
• Gardening Gloves – To protect your hands while navigating thick vegetation
• Sandals or Sturdy Walking Shoes – For when you’re not trekking
• Hat and Sunscreen – Stay protected from the sun
