Gorillas beat their chests as a form of non-vocal communication, primarily used by silverback gorillas (adult males). This behavior serves two main purposes:
Chest beating is a long-distance signal often used in the dense forests where gorillas live. While infant gorillas may also beat their chests, they do so as part of mimicking adults and practicing behaviors they will use later in life.
If you’re curious to observe this fascinating behavior firsthand, gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers the perfect opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitat.
Yes, gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is safe. Uganda is one of the leading destinations for gorilla trekking, home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. Strict conservation policies and trained guides ensure the safety of both visitors and the gorillas.
Bwindi is also a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, making it a premier destination for encountering these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of only two parks in Uganda where you can trek and see mountain gorillas. Bwindi is home to over 50% of the world’s mountain gorilla population, making it the most famous gorilla trekking destination in the world.
The park is also one of the oldest forests in Africa and spans four trekking sectors:
Each sector offers a similar and equally enjoyable gorilla trekking experience.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has 18 habituated gorilla families available for trekking, spread across its four sectors. Each family is visited by a maximum of 8 visitors per day, as per Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations.
Here’s a breakdown of the gorilla families by sector:
These regulations and limited permits help conserve the gorillas and maintain a sustainable tourism model.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi starts early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, with a briefing at the park headquarters. During the briefing, guides explain the dos and don’ts of trekking and interacting with gorillas.
Guides, rangers, and trackers then lead you into the forest to locate a gorilla family. Once you find them, you are allowed one hour to observe and take photos before heading back. Each trek ends with a certificate of participation, celebrating your unforgettable experience.
To participate, you must be at least 15 years old, as minors are not permitted due to safety and conservation concerns.
Gorilla trekking permits for Bwindi are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are priced as follows:
Each permit allows you to spend one hour with the gorillas.
Permits often sell out quickly during the peak seasons of January, February, July, August, September, and December. Contact Trek Africa Gorillas Ltd to secure your permit in advance and plan your trek.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, being a tropical forest, experiences rainfall throughout the year. However, the best time for gorilla trekking is during the drier months: January, February, June, July, August, and early September. These months generally have less rainfall, making trekking paths more accessible and the overall experience more enjoyable.
That said, gorilla trekking is possible year-round. Interestingly, the rainy season can also be a good time to visit, as gorillas tend to stay closer due to the abundance of food. During this time, you may find it easier to spot them. Regardless of when you plan to visit, it’s important to book your gorilla permits well in advance since they sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons.
