What Are Gorilla Permits?

A gorilla permit is an official document that grants you access to gorilla trekking in designated national parks. Each permit is uniquely numbered and confirms your authorization to visit a specific gorilla family on a set date.

In Uganda, gorilla permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Rwanda permits are managed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), and permits in DR Congo are handled by Virunga National Park authorities.

Availability of Gorilla Permits in Uganda

Uganda offers 160 gorilla permits daily, spread across 20 habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Each gorilla family is visited by a maximum of 8 people per day. The gorilla families are distributed across the following regions:

• Buhoma: 4 gorilla families
• Ruhija: 4 gorilla families
• Rushaga: 8 gorilla families (the largest number of groups)
• Nkuringo: 3 gorilla families

Given the limited availability and high demand, especially during peak seasons, it’s essential to secure your permits well in advance.

How to Book Last-Minute Gorilla Permits in Uganda

If you’re planning a last-minute gorilla trekking trip, follow these steps to secure your permit:

1. Confirm Your Travel Dates: Once your dates are finalized, email us at info@trekafricagorillas.com with your preferred trekking date.
2. Permit Availability Check: We’ll verify availability with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and confirm if permits are available for your chosen date.
3. Make Payment: Once availability is confirmed, we’ll issue you an invoice. After receiving your payment, we’ll immediately purchase your permit.
4. Receive Your Permit: We’ll send you a scanned copy of your permit for your records and confirmation.

It’s always advisable to book your permits at least 2–3 months in advance, but for last-minute bookings, we’ll do our best to secure permits based on availability.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Mountain gorilla trekking is only possible in Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo, home to the last remaining mountain gorillas. The key national parks include:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• DR Congo: Virunga National Park

In DR Congo, you can also see lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Regardless of the location, a valid gorilla permit is required for trekking.

Cost of Gorilla Permits in Uganda

The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda depends on your residency status:

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
• Foreign Residents: $700 per person per trek
• East African Citizens: $80 per person per trek

The permit allows you to spend one hour with a gorilla family in either Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group under the guidance of researchers and trackers. This unique experience costs $1,500 per person and is only available in Bwindi.

What Is the Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Bwindi is 15 years, and there’s no strict maximum age. However, the trek can be physically demanding, so fitness levels are key for older participants.

For seniors or those with limited mobility, Bwindi offers sedan chair carriers, which allow trekkers to be carried by porters to and from the forest. These chairs make it possible for elders or individuals unable to walk long distances to still enjoy the experience. Sedan chair rentals can be arranged in advance or on the day of your trek, with prices ranging from $400–$500.

When Is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can be done year-round, but the best time to visit is during the drier months:

• January and February
• June to early September

The dry season makes travel to the park easier, and the vegetation is less dense, offering clearer views of the gorillas.

What Should You Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?

To fully enjoy your trek, it’s important to pack the right gear. The forest can be muddy, with steep and challenging terrain, especially in the rainy season. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Clothing & Footwear:
  • Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots
  • Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight trousers for protection against stinging plants and insects
  • Rain jacket and sweater/fleece for varying weather conditions

  Bwindi is approximately an 8–9 hour drive from Kampala or Entebbe via the Kabale-Kisoro road. To reach the southern sector (Rushaga and Nkuringo), turn off at Muko and follow signs to your accommodation.
• By Air:
  Domestic flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip are available for quicker access to Bwindi’s southern sectors. Flights are offered by local operators such as Aerolink and Fly Uganda, and transfers from the airstrip to the park can be arranged with your tour operator.
