Trekking a Large Gorilla Group in Rwanda — Are you looking for an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda? If so, consider trekking Group 13, one of the most fascinating gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park. Despite its name, this group consists of over 26 individuals, including one dominant silverback, 11 adult females, four juveniles, and two infants.
History of Group 13 (Agashya Group)
Contrary to its name, Group 13 was not named based on the number of gorillas but rather in the order in which it was discovered. This naming system was initiated by the legendary primatologist Dian Fossey.
Group 13 has a rich history. In 1992, the group lost its leading silverback, Murith, which led to the migration of all adult females to other silverbacks. Some females formed the Sabyinyo group, leaving only three young males—Munani, Nyakarima, and Kwirinda. These males stayed together until Munani became a silverback. Over time, he acquired females from other groups, expanding his family.
In 2002, Munani passed away, leaving behind a group of seven members. A blackback and the oldest female, Safari, led the group temporarily until a new silverback, Agashya, took over. Agashya brought three more members with him, increasing the group to 10. Over the years, he successfully expanded the family to 21 members, demonstrating strong leadership. His name, Agashya, means “something special,” reflecting his ability to lead such a large group.
The trek to meet Group 13 takes approximately 35–45 minutes from the Volcanoes National Park entrance, making it one of the more accessible gorilla groups to visit.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park, also known as Parc National des Volcans, is located in Musanze, Rwanda. It is one of Africa’s oldest national parks and is home to the endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and a variety of bird species, primates, and unique vegetation. The park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi, and Mount Bisoke.
Gorilla tourism plays a vital role in Rwanda’s economy, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Trekking to see these incredible primates in their natural habitat is an awe-inspiring experience that supports conservation efforts and local communities.
How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available in Volcanoes National Park?
Volcanoes National Park has 10 habituated gorilla families available for trekking, with a maximum of 8 visitors per group per day. This means only 80 permits are available daily, ensuring a low-impact and intimate experience with the gorillas. With a 99% chance of seeing the gorillas, visitors are guided by expert trackers, rangers, and guides.
Gorilla treks begin daily at 7:00 AM from the Kinigi Visitor Center, where you receive a briefing on trekking guidelines. Although gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans, they remain wild animals, so it’s essential to follow the park’s rules and respect their space.
