Are you dreaming of a family gorilla tours in Uganda with your kids? Whether you’re visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Excursia Adventures can help you arrange an unforgettable family adventure. While the Uganda Wildlife Authority has set the minimum age for gorilla trekking at 15 years, we can guide you through the process of arranging a special experience for children under 15.
Gorilla Trekking and Children: What You Need to Know
While children under 15 years are generally not allowed to trek gorillas in Uganda due to the challenging terrain and the risk of transmitting diseases to these critically endangered animals, Excursia Adventures can still help you plan a visit. The trek through Bwindi’s hilly and often slippery forest can be difficult for younger children, and the safety of the gorillas and trekkers is our priority.
Though children under 15 cannot participate in the gorilla trek, they can still enjoy a family safari in Uganda. We recommend taking the little ones on nature walks, community visits, or other exciting activities while you embark on the trek. The trek itself is limited to 8 people per family of gorillas, so make sure to book your permits well in advance to secure your spot.
Family-Friendly Activities Around Gorilla Trekking
While the main activity is, of course, gorilla trekking, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers plenty of other family-friendly activities. From nature walks to exploring the local communities, children can still engage in the safari experience. If you’d like to include your little ones in the journey, there are plenty of opportunities for them to learn and interact with the surrounding wildlife and culture.
What to Expect from a Family Gorilla Tour in Bwindi
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, located in southern Uganda, is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. With its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes, Bwindi is a must-visit destination for families seeking adventure and wildlife encounters. The park is divided into four sectors: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo, where visitors can trek with different gorilla families. Each family is led by a dominant silverback male, and only 8 people are allowed to trek with each family per day.
Booking Your Gorilla Permits
To trek gorillas in Bwindi, you need to secure a gorilla permit, which is required for every person trekking. Since the number of permits per gorilla family is limited, we recommend booking your permit at least 3 to 6 months in advance. Excursia Adventures can help you check availability and secure your permits for the dates you plan to visit. Once your permits are confirmed, we will send you the payment details and a receipt from Uganda Wildlife Authority to ensure your spot.
Where to Stay for Your Family Gorilla Tour
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has various accommodation options in each of its sectors. Depending on the sector where you’ll be trekking, we can help you find a lodge that fits your family’s needs, whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly stay or a luxurious retreat. Some of the popular accommodations include:
- Buhoma Sector: Buhoma Community Camp (budget), Buhoma Haven Lodge (mid-range), Bwindi Lodge, Mahogany Springs Lodge, Buhoma Lodge (luxury), Gorilla Forest Camp (up-market).
