Gorilla Families in Nkuringo Sector
January 2, 2025Gorilla Families in Rushaga Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
The Rushaga sector, located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is renowned for hosting the largest number of gorilla families compared to any other sector. With five habituated families, Rushaga offers visitors an excellent opportunity for gorilla trekking.
The terrain in Rushaga is relatively gentle compared to other sectors, making it a great choice for trekkers seeking a less physically demanding experience. Its proximity to Kisoro town and accessibility from Kigali, Rwanda, also makes it a convenient starting point for those traveling from Rwanda.
In addition to gorilla trekking, Rushaga is the only sector in Bwindi that offers the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience with two families—Bushaho and Bikyingi—currently undergoing habituation. Visitors can also enjoy a cultural encounter with the Batwa community, who share their rich traditions and history.
Gorilla Families in the Rushaga Sector
1. Nshongi Gorilla Group
The Nshongi Gorilla Group was once the largest family in Bwindi, with over 36 members. Over time, the group has split twice, forming the Bweza and Mishaya families. Today, Nshongi is still a vibrant group with 25 members, including:
- 1 dominant silverback
- 3 sub-silverbacks
- 4 blackbacks
- 7 adult females
- 6 juveniles
- 4 infants
This playful group is particularly popular among visitors, with its lively infants being a highlight during treks.
2. Mishaya Gorilla Group
The Mishaya Gorilla Group formed in 2010 after a split from the Nshongi group. Mishaya, the dominant silverback, led seven members to create his own family. Known for its history of disputes and fights, the group has grown to 12 members, including 3 infants.
3. Bweza Gorilla Group
The Bweza Gorilla Group also broke away from Nshongi in 2013, starting with 8 members. Although park authorities initially hoped the group would reconcile with Nshongi, this did not happen. Bweza has since become a fully habituated group, open for trekking.
The group currently consists of:
- 1 silverback
- 2 infants
- Several females and juveniles
Bweza is often praised for its intriguing dynamics and day-to-day activities, making it a favorite among visitors.
4. Kahungye Gorilla Family
The Kahungye Gorilla Family was habituated in 2011 and originally had 27 members. However, internal conflicts led to a split, forming the Busingye group. Today, Kahungye has 13 members, led by the dominant silverback Rumansi, along with two blackbacks (Rwigi and Ruhamuka) and several females and juveniles.
5. Busingye Gorilla Family
The Busingye Gorilla Family was formed in 2012 after breaking away from the Kahungye group. The family derives its name from its leader, Busingye, meaning “peace” in the local language. Ironically, Busingye is known for his combative nature and for stealing females from other groups to expand his own family. The group started with 7 members and has grown to 8 members, thanks to Busingye’s dominance and power.
What to Wear and Carry for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga
Gorilla trekking in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is an unforgettable experience, but it requires preparation to ensure you’re comfortable and ready for the terrain and weather. Here’s a guide on what to wear and take for your trek:
What to Wear During Gorilla Trekking
- Sturdy Footwear:
Wear strong, comfortable hiking boots with a good grip. The trails can be steep, muddy, and slippery, so your footwear is crucial. - Clothing:
- Thick Trousers and Long-Sleeved Shirts: These will protect you from stinging nettles and thorny plants.
- Sweatshirt or Light Jacket: It’s often chilly in the morning, so layering up is a good idea. A long-sleeved top also provides extra protection from vegetation.
- Color: Gorillas are habituated to human presence, so the color of your clothes (bright or muted) doesn’t matter much.
- Gardening Gloves:
These are useful for grabbing onto thorny vegetation or providing extra grip on slippery slopes.
What to Carry During Gorilla Trekking
- Daypack:
Use a lightweight, waterproof backpack to carry your essentials. - Rain Gear:
A poncho or raincoat is essential, especially during the rainy season, as Bwindi’s tropical rainforest can experience rain at any time. - Snacks and Water:
- Carry at least 2 liters of drinking water to stay hydrated. Bottled water is available at your accommodation.
- Pack light snacks to keep your energy up during the hike.
- Sun Protection:
Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun can be intense even in the forest. - Camera and Accessories:
Protect your camera gear with waterproof covers or seal them in plastic bags to shield them from rain and mud. - Binoculars (Optional):
While not necessary for gorilla viewing, bird watchers may find binoculars useful for spotting rare forest birds during the trek.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga
The Rushaga sector is open for gorilla trekking year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons, which are:
- June to August
- December to February
During these months, rainfall is minimal, and the forest trails are less slippery, making the trekking experience more enjoyable.
If you visit during the rainy seasons (March to May and November), you may encounter higher rainfall. However, this is also when many lodges offer discounts, making it a budget-friendly time to visit.
