The Rushaga sector, located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is renowned for hosting the largest number of gorilla families compared to any other sector. With five habituated families, Rushaga offers visitors an excellent opportunity for gorilla trekking.
The terrain in Rushaga is relatively gentle compared to other sectors, making it a great choice for trekkers seeking a less physically demanding experience. Its proximity to Kisoro town and accessibility from Kigali, Rwanda, also makes it a convenient starting point for those traveling from Rwanda.
In addition to gorilla trekking, Rushaga is the only sector in Bwindi that offers the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience with two families—Bushaho and Bikyingi—currently undergoing habituation. Visitors can also enjoy a cultural encounter with the Batwa community, who share their rich traditions and history.
The Nshongi Gorilla Group was once the largest family in Bwindi, with over 36 members. Over time, the group has split twice, forming the Bweza and Mishaya families. Today, Nshongi is still a vibrant group with 25 members, including:
This playful group is particularly popular among visitors, with its lively infants being a highlight during treks.
The Mishaya Gorilla Group formed in 2010 after a split from the Nshongi group. Mishaya, the dominant silverback, led seven members to create his own family. Known for its history of disputes and fights, the group has grown to 12 members, including 3 infants.
The Bweza Gorilla Group also broke away from Nshongi in 2013, starting with 8 members. Although park authorities initially hoped the group would reconcile with Nshongi, this did not happen. Bweza has since become a fully habituated group, open for trekking.
The group currently consists of:
Bweza is often praised for its intriguing dynamics and day-to-day activities, making it a favorite among visitors.
The Kahungye Gorilla Family was habituated in 2011 and originally had 27 members. However, internal conflicts led to a split, forming the Busingye group. Today, Kahungye has 13 members, led by the dominant silverback Rumansi, along with two blackbacks (Rwigi and Ruhamuka) and several females and juveniles.
The Busingye Gorilla Family was formed in 2012 after breaking away from the Kahungye group. The family derives its name from its leader, Busingye, meaning “peace” in the local language. Ironically, Busingye is known for his combative nature and for stealing females from other groups to expand his own family. The group started with 7 members and has grown to 8 members, thanks to Busingye’s dominance and power.
Gorilla trekking in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is an unforgettable experience, but it requires preparation to ensure you’re comfortable and ready for the terrain and weather. Here’s a guide on what to wear and take for your trek:
The Rushaga sector is open for gorilla trekking year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons, which are:
During these months, rainfall is minimal, and the forest trails are less slippery, making the trekking experience more enjoyable.
If you visit during the rainy seasons (March to May and November), you may encounter higher rainfall. However, this is also when many lodges offer discounts, making it a budget-friendly time to visit.
