- Briefing: The trek starts at 7:00 AM with a briefing at the park headquarters. Here, guides will provide information on the rules and safety precautions.
- The Trek: Led by expert trackers and rangers, visitors hike through the dense rainforest to locate the gorillas. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location.
- Gorilla Encounter: Once the gorillas are found, visitors spend a magical hour observing their behavior, taking photos, and enjoying this rare experience.
- Certificate of Participation: After the trek, visitors return to the headquarters to receive a certificate for successfully completing their gorilla trekking experience.
Gorilla Trekking Permit Prices in Bwindi
To visit the mountain gorillas, you need a gorilla trekking permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The current permit prices are:
- $800 per person for Non-Foreign Residents
- $700 per person for Foreign Residents
- UGX 300,000 for East African Citizens
Since gorilla permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (January, February, June, July, August, September, and December), it’s advisable to book in advance.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
While gorilla trekking is available year-round, the best time to visit is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. These months experience less rainfall, making trekking easier. However, the wet season (March to May and October to November) also has its advantages, as gorillas are easier to spot due to the abundance of food.
How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi can be accessed by both road and air:
- By Road: A 9-10 hour scenic drive from Entebbe/Kampala, with stopovers at the Equator and for lunch in Mbarara.
- By Air: Domestic flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrips, followed by a short drive to Bwindi.
- Via Kigali, Rwanda: A 4-5 hour drive from Kigali International Airport through the Cyanika or Katuna border crossings.
For those flying into Kigali, an East African Visa ($100) allows multiple entries to Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda, making travel more convenient.
