Top 10 Budget-Friendly Safari Activities in Uganda

1. Primate Tracking

Uganda is home to a wide variety of primates, making primate tracking one of the top safari activities in the country. You can embark on a trek through Uganda’s lush forests in search of the world’s famous primates. The most notable activities include gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking and golden monkey trekking. These treks follow strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of both visitors and wildlife. During your trek, you’ll encounter these fascinating creatures up close, making it an unforgettable experience.

2. Gorilla Trekking

For a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, gorilla trekking is a must-do on any Ugandan safari. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are the prime spots for this unforgettable experience. To join a trek, you’ll need a gorilla permit (USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for East African residents and USD 80 for East African citizens). This permit allows you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas. If you’re looking for a more immersive experience, consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which costs USD 1500 and lets you spend up to four hours with the gorillas.

3. Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is another highlight for nature lovers. Uganda’s Kibale Forest National Park, Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kalinzu Forest and Budongo Forest near Murchison Falls National Park are some of the best places for chimpanzee trekking. A regular chimpanzee trekking permit costs USD 200 for foreign non-residents, USD 150 for residents and USD 30 for citizens. For an extended experience, try the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Forest, where you can spend a half-day observing the chimps in their natural habitat.

4. Golden Monkey Trekking

For a unique experience, head to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for golden monkey trekking. These playful, rare creatures are an incredible sight to see. A regular golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 and it allows you to spend one hour with the monkeys. Alternatively, you can opt for the Golden Monkey Habituation Experience, which costs USD 140 and gives you four hours to observe these fascinating animals.

5. Gorilla Habituation Experience

If you’re passionate about mountain gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is a deeper, more personal way to interact with these majestic creatures. Offered in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, this experience allows you to trek in search of semi-habituated gorillas, who are less accustomed to human presence. Once found, you’ll spend up to four hours with them, helping them become more comfortable with humans. This unique experience is available to small groups of four people and costs USD 1500 per person.

6. Wildlife Viewing and Game Drives

Uganda’s national parks are teeming with wildlife, offering a wealth of opportunities for game drives and wildlife viewing. Explore the savannah parks such as Kidepo Valley, Murchison Falls, Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here, you can see a wide variety of animals, including tree-climbing lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, leopards and more. A safari game drive is a great way to witness these creatures in their natural environment.

7. Experiential Tourism Activities

For an even more immersive experience, consider experiential tourism activities. These include lion tracking, mongoose tracking, hippo census and bird counts, all of which take place in Queen Elizabeth National Park. These activities give you a rare chance to engage directly with wildlife conservation efforts and learn more about Uganda’s ecosystems while experiencing animals in their natural habitats.

8. Bird Watching

Uganda is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 1,000 species to spot across its various parks. Whether you’re exploring the wetlands of Mabamba Swamp for the rare shoebill stork or the tropical forests of Bwindi and Mgahinga for endemic species, there’s plenty to discover. Uganda is home to some of Africa’s most unique and diverse bird species, making it a perfect destination for bird lovers.

9. Boat Cruises on Lake Victoria

While camping on a low budget, don’t miss the chance to take a boat cruise on Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. A peaceful boat ride offers stunning views of the surrounding islands, beaches and forests. You can also explore Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary or cross the equator line, a unique experience where you can witness the world’s largest freshwater lake from a different perspective.

10. Cultural Experiences in Uganda

Uganda is known for its incredible cultural diversity, home to over 50 ethnic groups and languages. During your safari, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the richness of local cultures firsthand. Many national parks in Uganda offer cultural encounters where you can visit communities living near the parks. You’ll learn about their daily lives, the challenges of co-existing with wildlife and how they’ve managed to live peacefully alongside nature. Be sure to enjoy traditional dances and immerse yourself in the vibrant cultural heritage that makes Uganda truly unique.

11. Mountain Hiking and Cycling Adventures

If you’re an adventure seeker, mountain hiking and cycling are exciting activities to add to your Uganda safari. With its diverse landscape of hills, mountains and highlands, Uganda is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re trekking the famous Rwenzori Mountains, climbing Mount Muhavura or cycling through the beautiful terrains near Mount Elgon, Uganda offers a wide variety of scenic and challenging routes to explore. These activities allow you to connect with nature while pushing your limits in stunning surroundings.

Best Time to Visit Uganda

The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry months, from December to February and June to October. These months offer more manageable weather, making it easier to explore the national parks and enjoy wildlife viewing. Since Uganda lies along the equator, it experiences a modified equatorial climate with two rainy seasons. During the rainy months, from March to May and November, heavy rains can make roads slippery and hiking trails challenging. Therefore, visiting during the dry season is recommended for a smoother and more enjoyable safari experience.
