Planning a Budget Gorilla Safari to Mgahinga National Park

Planning a Budget Gorilla Safari to Mgahinga National Park

If you’re dreaming of an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience on a budget, Mgahinga National Park is an ideal destination. Located in the far southwest of Uganda, this park offers a unique opportunity to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It shares borders with both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it part of the Virunga Volcanoes—a stunning volcanic mountain chain that spans three countries and is famous for its mountain gorilla safaris.

Though it’s Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga is rich in biodiversity and is home to the endangered mountain gorillas and the golden monkeys. The park is a tropical rainforest, featuring everything from lowland equatorial forests to mountain bamboo and montane rainforests.

What is Gorilla Trekking Like in Mgahinga?

Mgahinga is home to just one gorilla family—the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group, which is open for trekking. As with all gorilla trekking in Uganda, securing your gorilla permit in advance is essential. There are only eight permits available per day for visitors to trek with this family, so early booking is crucial to guarantee your spot.

The cost of a gorilla permit for trekking in Mgahinga is similar to that of Bwindi National Park:

• USD 800 for Foreign Non-Residents
• USD 700 for Foreign Residents
• UGX 300,000 for East African Residents

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga is done in the morning session, which starts with a briefing at the Park Headquarters. Afterward, you’ll head out on a thrilling trek through the dense forest, looking for these magnificent creatures.

What to Expect on a Gorilla Trekking Safari

During your trek, you’ll be accompanied by experienced guides and park rangers who will help you navigate through the dense rainforest and up the steep mountain slopes. While trekking, you may encounter a range of wildlife but the real highlight is when you finally come face-to-face with the mountain gorillas.

You’ll be allowed to spend one hour observing the gorillas and witnessing their daily activities, such as feeding, moving and interacting with one another. The experience of seeing these incredible creatures up close—within 5 to 7 meters—is truly once-in-a-lifetime.
