Exploring the Batwa Culture on Your Tour

You’ll have the chance to witness traditional dances, learn the art of fire-making and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of this fascinating community.

The Batwa in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, located in southern Uganda near the border with Congo, is one of only two national parks in the world where you can trek to see the magnificent Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. Home to over half of the remaining wild Mountain Gorillas, Bwindi is renowned for its exceptional gorilla trekking experiences.

The park is divided into several sectors, including Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo, each offering distinct gorilla tracking opportunities. Within Bwindi, various habituated gorilla families welcome visitors, each led by a dominant male, known as the Silverback. To join a trek, you will need a valid gorilla permit, which is limited to ensure a maximum of eight visitors per gorilla family each day.

The Batwa in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in Kisoro district in southwestern Uganda, is part of the Virunga volcanic mountain chain that extends through Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga is bordered by Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This park is known for its stunning landscapes, featuring three volcanic mountains: Gahinga, Sabyinyo and Muhabura, all part of the Virunga Mountains conservation area. Mgahinga is a tropical rainforest that supports a diverse ecosystem, including the endangered Mountain Gorilla and the playful Golden Monkeys.
