Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of wildlife, including primates and reptiles, adding to the magic of this trek.
The History and Formation of the Rwenzori Mountains
The Rwenzori Mountains date back approximately three million years. This range consists of multiple massifs, separated by deep valleys and stunning glacial lakes. The six main massifs include:
- Mount Stanley – 5,109 meters
- Mount Speke – 4,890 meters
- Mount Baker – 4,843 meters
- Mount Emin – 4,798 meters
- Mount Gessi – 4,715 meters
- Mount Luigi di Savoia – 4,627 meters
Covering 120 km in length and 60 km in width, the Rwenzori Mountains offer a variety of peaks and trekking routes that challenge and excite adventurers.
The Legendary “Mountains of the Moon”
Ancient Greek explorers referred to the Rwenzori Mountains as the “Mountains of the Moon”, believing them to be the source of the Nile. This name was first recorded by the Greek merchant Diogenes, who described towering, snow-capped peaks. However, due to climate change, the glaciers have been shrinking, and their future remains uncertain.
