Planning a trip to Bwindi for the Gorilla Habituation Experience? Nkuringo, located within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, offers much more than just gorilla trekking. After your unforgettable gorilla encounter, explore these exciting activities and attractions in the Nkuringo sector.
The Nkuringo Gorilla Family was the first group to be habituated in this region back in 1997 and opened for trekking in 2004. Initially consisting of 19 members, the group now has 12 members. The family gets its name from the local area, Nkuringo, which means “Hills”. This group is particularly significant as it was the first to give birth to twins in 2004, although one twin sadly passed away.
The Bushaho Gorilla Family, with 9 members currently, was opened for trekking in 2016. As with all gorilla families, the size of the group may grow as new members are born. This family contributes to Bwindi’s recognition as one of the best destinations for seeing endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Located in the southern part of Bwindi, the Christmas Gorilla Family is the third group habituated in Nkuringo. With up to 9 members, including a dominant silverback named Christmas, this group is notable for its frequent visits to neighboring communities in search of food.
Embark on a cultural journey with the Batwa people, the original inhabitants of Bwindi Forest. A Batwa guide will take you through their fascinating traditional forest life, including performances of their traditional dances, fire-making techniques, and other customs.
Beyond gorilla trekking, enjoy a guided nature walk in Bwindi Forest. The Ivi-Nkuringo Trail offers scenic views and the opportunity to observe various plant and wildlife species. The trail also takes you to a beautiful waterfall, plummeting 33 meters.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of Uganda’s top birding spots, with over 350 species recorded. The Nombe Pocket Forest, just 5km from Nkuringo, and the nearby Buniga Forest are ideal locations for birdwatching. Don’t forget to bring your birding guidebook!
