About Gorilla Families in Nkuringo
Nkuringo Gorilla Family
The Nkuringo Gorilla Family was the first group to be habituated in this region back in 1997 and opened for trekking in 2004. Initially consisting of 19 members, the group now has 12 members. The family gets its name from the local area, Nkuringo, which means “Hills”. This group is particularly significant as it was the first to give birth to twins in 2004, although one twin sadly passed away.
Bushaho Gorilla Family
The Bushaho Gorilla Family, with 9 members currently, was opened for trekking in 2016. As with all gorilla families, the size of the group may grow as new members are born. This family contributes to Bwindi’s recognition as one of the best destinations for seeing endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Christmas Gorilla Family
Located in the southern part of Bwindi, the Christmas Gorilla Family is the third group habituated in Nkuringo. With up to 9 members, including a dominant silverback named Christmas, this group is notable for its frequent visits to neighboring communities in search of food.

The best months to visit Nkuringo for gorilla trekking are during the dry seasons, from January, February, and June to early September. This is when access to the park is easiest and visibility is at its best due to the lighter vegetation.
How to Get to Nkuringo
By Road:
Nkuringo is accessible via an 8-9 hour drive from Entebbe or Kampala. The route passes through Kabale town before reaching Nkuringo. Alternatively, you can travel from Kigali, Rwanda, which takes about 4-5 hours.
By Air:
You can also fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala’s Kajjansi airfield to Kisoro airstrip, which is about a 2-hour drive from Nkuringo. Domestic airlines such as Aero Link and Fly Uganda operate scheduled and chartered flights to Kisoro.
