Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: A Complete Guide

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an unforgettable experience that allows you to observe the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. But to make the most of your trek, knowing the best time to go is crucial. The best months for gorilla trekking are the drier seasons—January, February and June to early September. During these months, travel to the parks is easier and the dense vegetation is less of a challenge, giving you a clearer view of the gorillas.

Top Gorilla Trekking Locations in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is primarily done in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is divided into four sectors:

• Buhoma (Northern part)
• Ruhija (Northeastern part)
• Nkuringo (Southern part)
• Rushaga (Southern part)

Each sector offers unique experiences and different gorilla families for trekking. Rushaga is particularly popular, with multiple gorilla families to visit. Additionally, Bwindi’s proximity to Queen Elizabeth National Park makes it ideal for combining gorilla trekking with a safari.

Gorilla Trekking Costs in Uganda

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
• East African Residents: $700 per person
• East African Citizens: $80 per person

This price allows you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas. For those wanting more time, consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience, available in Bwindi. This experience costs $1,500 and lets you spend up to four hours with the gorillas, giving you a deeper, more immersive experience.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Wondering what to pack for your adventure? Here’s a list of clothing and items to bring for a comfortable and enjoyable trek:

• Long-sleeved sweater – The forest can get chilly, so bring a warm layer.
• Two pairs of long trousers – These will help protect you from the undergrowth and insects.
• Waterproof hiking boots – Essential for muddy and uneven terrain.
• Hat and sunglasses – Optional but helpful, depending on the weather.
• Camera with long-lasting batteries – Don’t forget to keep the flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
• Binoculars – Great for spotting birds and other wildlife along the trek.
• Gardening gloves – Handy for holding onto branches and trees during your hike.
• Raincoat – The weather in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can be unpredictable, so it’s always wise to be prepared.
• Mosquito repellent – A must-have for protecting yourself from forest insects.
• Sunscreen – While it can be cool, it can also get sunny, so protect your skin from sunburn.

Note: Avoid wearing bright colors or black and blue. Bright colors might frighten the gorillas and black/blue attracts Tsetse flies. Opt for neutral colors like green, brown or khaki.
