How to Get to Trackers Safari Lodge

Trackers Safari Lodge is easily accessible from both Entebbe and Kigali, making it a convenient choice for international travelers.

By Domestic Flight

For a quicker and more convenient option, you can fly from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip, a flight that takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. From there, it’s a scenic 1-hour drive to the lodge. Aerolink and Kampala Executive Aviation operate domestic flights to Kihihi, allowing you to save time and spend more time enjoying activities at the lodge.

By Road

If you prefer a road trip, it’s an 8-9 hour drive from Kampala to the lodge. While the journey may be longer, it offers travelers the chance to experience Uganda’s beautiful landscapes, making stops at interesting spots like the Equator Crossing and local craft shops. A 4×4 safari vehicle is recommended, as some roads can be bumpy and unpaved.

If you’re coming from Kigali, Rwanda, the drive is shorter, approximately 5-6 hours, with the option to pass through Kigali’s Genocide Museum. You can even start your drive as late as midday, making it a flexible option for travelers.

Top Activities at Trackers Safari Lodge

While staying at Trackers Safari Lodge, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of Bwindi. Here are some of the highlights:

Gorilla Tracking in Buhoma & Ruhija

Gorilla tracking is the main attraction in the region and Trackers Safari Lodge is perfectly situated to access the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors of Bwindi. The lodge is particularly close to Buhoma, where several gorilla families are located. Make sure to book your gorilla permit in advance, as permits are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. You can contact the Encounter Africa Reservations Office for assistance with securing your permit.

Bird Watching in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a bird lover’s paradise, boasting over 350 bird species, 23 of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift Valley region. This makes Bwindi an exclusive destination for bird watching, where you’ll have the chance to spot rare and unique species found nowhere else on Earth. Birding excursions typically range from half-day to full-day trips, with a park entry fee of USD 40 and an additional USD 80 for a specialist bird guide to ensure you get the most out of your experience.

Hiking and Nature Walks in Bwindi

Bwindi’s rainforest is rich in biodiversity, from its rivers that begin within the forest to the many plant and animal species it harbors. Hiking through this expansive forest is a thrilling adventure, as it allows you to explore untouched landscapes, including ancient woodlands, dense bamboo forests, fallen tree trunks, ferns and shrubs. Many parts of Bwindi are still unexplored, making hiking here a truly unique and adrenaline-pumping experience. The hike offers not only a physical challenge but also an opportunity for exploration, discovery and awe-inspiring beauty.

You’ll be picked up directly from your lodge for your hiking adventure and there’s no need to book in advance. Our expert guide will ensure a seamless and safe experience while you immerse yourself in the forest’s wonders.

Batwa Cultural Experience & Community Engagement

A unique aspect of staying at Trackers Safari Lodge is the opportunity to engage with the local Batwa community. The Batwa are the indigenous people who once lived in Bwindi Forest, relying on it for food, medicine and shelter. After Bwindi was gazetted as a national park, the Batwa were relocated to settlements on the park’s edge. Although their lives have changed, the Batwa continue to face economic challenges.

By participating in community walks, you’ll have the chance to learn about the Batwa’s rich cultural heritage while contributing to their livelihood. Trackers Safari Lodge is also involved in other community projects, such as supporting local schools and women’s groups and encouraging donations of scholastic materials to help improve education in the region.
