Are you planning a family adventure to Uganda and thinking about taking your 12-year-old child on a gorilla safari? Whether you’re visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, this unforgettable experience offers an opportunity to bond with nature, wildlife, and each other. Here’s what you need to know about taking a child on a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority currently has a minimum age requirement of 15 years for gorilla trekking. This policy ensures the safety and well-being of both the gorillas and visitors. Children under 15 are generally not allowed to trek the gorillas, mainly for reasons concerning their ability to remain calm during the trek and the potential for transmitting communicable diseases like the flu or a cold, which could negatively impact the gorillas due to their genetic similarities with humans.
However, there are some exceptions where children under 15 might be permitted to trek if certain conditions are met. The child must be well-behaved, able to follow instructions, and understand the importance of staying quiet and calm during the trek.
While the official policy restricts children under 15 from trekking, it is still possible for your 12-year-old to join the adventure, given certain conditions:
If your child is not allowed to trek due to age restrictions, they can still enjoy other activities such as nature walks, cultural experiences, and visiting nearby communities while you take part in the gorilla trek.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the only two places in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas in the wild. The park is located in the southwest of Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it an incredibly special and sought-after destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
The trekking experience takes you through dense jungle, often hilly, slippery, and muddy terrain. While this is an adventure in itself, it can be physically challenging, especially for younger trekkers. It’s essential to assess whether your child is comfortable and physically prepared for the journey.
Bwindi is divided into several sectors: Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. Each sector is home to different gorilla families. Gorilla trekking permits are limited to only eight visitors per family per day to ensure a more personalized experience.
To trek with your 12-year-old, you will need to secure your gorilla permits well in advance. The permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, and there are only 8 spots available per gorilla family each day.
