Children under 15 are generally not allowed to trek the gorillas, mainly for reasons concerning their ability to remain calm during the trek and the potential for transmitting communicable diseases like the flu or a cold, which could negatively impact the gorillas due to their genetic similarities with humans.

However, there are some exceptions where children under 15 might be permitted to trek if certain conditions are met. The child must be well-behaved, able to follow instructions, and understand the importance of staying quiet and calm during the trek.

Requirements for Trekking with a 12-Year-Old Child

While the official policy restricts children under 15 from trekking, it is still possible for your 12-year-old to join the adventure, given certain conditions:

1. Parental Waiver: A signed waiver is required from parents or guardians, acknowledging the risks and responsibilities involved. This legal document confirms that the tour operator and Uganda Wildlife Authority will not be held liable for any unforeseen incidents.
2. Group Trekking: Children often trek with their family group for easier management. It’s important to keep the group small for the safety and comfort of the child and the gorillas.
3. Supervision: Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times, and a guide will ensure they stay in control throughout the trek.
4. Permit Requirement: Just like adults, children over the age of 12 are required to pay for a gorilla permit, which is the same price as for adults. The permit guarantees access to the gorillas on the day of the trek.

What to Expect During the Trek

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the only two places in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas in the wild.
