What is a Gorilla Trekking Certificate?

A gorilla trekking certificate is a special document awarded to travelers after successfully trekking mountain gorillas in any of the designated national parks in Africa. This certificate serves as a memorable token of an unforgettable wildlife adventure—something many safari-goers cherish for years to come.

Gorilla trekking is an awe-inspiring experience that draws people from all around the world to Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the high costs and physical demands of trekking through dense forests, crossing rivers and navigating challenging terrain, encountering gorillas in their natural habitat is one of the most unique and fulfilling experiences any traveler can have.

Top Destinations for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking is only possible in a few regions in Africa, as these areas are home to the last remaining mountain gorillas. These locations include:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
• Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo

To trek gorillas in these parks, you need a valid gorilla permit, which you can book through Uganda Wildlife Authority, Rwanda Development Board or a reputable tour operator.

Gorilla Permit Prices by Country

The cost of a gorilla permit varies by country:

• Uganda: $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for residents and $80 for East African citizens.
• Rwanda: $1500 for foreign non-residents, $500 for foreign residents and $200 for East African citizens.
• Congo: $400 for foreign non-residents during peak seasons (June-September, mid-December to mid-March) and $200 during the low season.

These permits allow you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas. For those interested in a longer experience, Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, which lasts four hours and costs $1500 per person.

Age and Accessibility Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, with the maximum age being 85 years. However, fitness levels are more important than age. For elderly travelers or those with mobility issues, sedan chair carriers are available in Bwindi, offering assistance to those who need help walking through the forest. This service costs between $400 and $500.

Best Time of Year to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year but the best time to go is during the dry months—January, February and June to early September. These months offer better accessibility to the parks and clearer views of the gorillas since the vegetation is less dense.
