As of now, Nshongi has around 25 members, including the dominant silverback, Nshongi, along with three sub-silverbacks, four blackbacks, seven adult females, six juveniles, and four infants. This playful and energetic group is particularly entertaining to watch, especially with the infant gorillas.

Mishaya Gorilla Group

The Mishaya Gorilla Group formed when silverback Mishaya split from the Nshongi group in 2010 after a series of conflicts. Mishaya left with seven members, and over the years, the group has grown. Known for its dynamic nature and occasional fights, the group now consists of 12 members, including three infants.

Bweza Gorilla Group

The Bweza Gorilla Group broke off from the Nshongi group in 2013 with just eight members. While there were attempts to reunite Bweza with Nshongi, the group remained independent and is now open for trekking. The group currently consists of one silverback, two infants, and a mix of females and juveniles. It’s a fascinating group to watch as they go about their daily activities.

Kahungye Gorilla Family

The Kahungye Gorilla Group was first habituated in 2011 with 27 members. However, within a year, internal disputes caused the group to split, forming the Busingye group. Today, Kahungye has 13 members, with silverback Rumansi at the helm. The group also includes two blackbacks, Rwigi and Ruhamuka, along with several females and juveniles.

Busingye Gorilla Family

The Busingye Gorilla Group was established in 2012 after splitting from the Kahungye group. The name Busingye means “peace,” but ironically, the silverback, also named Busingye, is known for being aggressive and often picking fights with other groups. Originally starting with seven members, the group has grown to eight members, expanding through the addition of females from other families.

What to Wear and Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

Gorilla trekking in Rushaga is an exciting adventure, but it requires preparation. Depending on the group you’re tracking, you may find yourself walking long distances through steep, muddy terrain with rain overhead, so it’s important to dress appropriately and carry the right gear.

What to Wear

• Sturdy Footwear: The trails can be challenging, so wearing a pair of sturdy, waterproof shoes or hiking boots is essential.
• Long Pants & Sleeves: To protect yourself from stinging nettles and thorny bushes, wear thick trousers and a long-sleeved shirt.
• Layers: It can be chilly in the early morning, so start your trek with a sweatshirt or fleece jacket. You can remove layers as the day warms up.
