February 4, 20257-Day Kilimanjaro Hiking Adventure via the Umbwe Route
Embark on the ultimate hiking adventure with a 7-Day Kilimanjaro Hiking Adventure via the Umbwe Route. As the highest mountain in Africa, located in Tanzania just 3 degrees south of the equator, Kilimanjaro offers an unforgettable experience with its permanent snow-covered peak and diverse landscapes. This trek is an amazing opportunity for non-technical climbers to conquer high-altitude hiking without needing advanced climbing skills.
Day 0: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you’ll be greeted by our team. You’ll then be transferred to your hotel in Moshi, where you’ll have time to relax and attend a briefing on your upcoming 7-day hike via the Umbwe Route.
Day-by-Day Kilimanjaro Hiking Itinerary
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp (5,905 ft/1,800 m to 9,190 ft/2,800 m) – 8 km, 5-7 Hours
After a hearty breakfast, we begin your trek with a scenic hour-long drive to Umbwe Village. Here, our staff will help you prepare your gear and you’ll complete the Kilimanjaro Park registration. Afterward, start your ascent from the Umbwe Gate and hike through the dense rainforest for about 5-6 hours, passing giant fig and rubber trees. At Umbwe Camp, your tent will be set up by our porters and you’ll be greeted with boiled drinking water to freshen up before dinner.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp (9,190 ft/2,800 m to 12,800 ft/3,900 m) – 8 km, 4-5 Hours
Today’s hike takes you through rainforest glades and into the drier air of the Giant Erica zone. As you reach an exposed ridge, you’ll have your first view of Uhuru Peak (weather permitting). After lunch, you’ll enter the semi-desert terrain and pass the unique Senecio plants. At Barranco Camp, you’ll enjoy a stunning sunset and be treated to boiled water before dinner. Be mindful of any altitude sickness symptoms.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp
Take the day to rest and acclimatize near Barranco Camp. This is a great spot to explore and take photos and many climbers consider this to be one of the most scenic camps along the route. If you’re feeling confident about your acclimatization, you could opt for the 6-day Umbwe itinerary.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (12,800 ft/3,900 m to 13,780 ft/4,200 m) – 7 km, 4 Hours
After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable climb. Continue on to Karanga Valley, the last place to gather water before heading higher. After reaching Karanga Camp, you’ll have some time to rest or explore, enjoying the panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (13,780 ft/4,200 m to 14,930 ft/4,550 m) – 5 km, 3-4 Hours
After breakfast, cross ridges and valleys before joining the Mweka Route to Barafu Camp. Here, your tent will be set up on a rocky ridge with strong winds. Familiarize yourself with the camp, rest and prepare your gear for the summit attempt. Early bedtime is recommended to rest before the early summit start.
Day 6: Summit Day! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (14,930 ft/4,550 m to 19,340 ft/5,895 m) – 7 km Up, 22 km Down
Wake up at 11:30 PM and begin your ascent toward the summit. After 6 hours of climbing through scree and switchbacks, you’ll reach Stella Point (18,650 ft/5,685 m) and, if conditions allow, enjoy a breathtaking sunrise. Continue for 1-2 more hours along the rim until you reach Uhuru Peak. Congratulations on reaching the Roof of Africa! After a short break for photos, begin your descent to Barafu Camp for a rest and then continue to Mweka Camp for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (10,170 ft/3,100 m to 6,500 ft/1,980 m) – 10 km, 3-4 Hours
Enjoy breakfast and then descend through a scenic 3-hour hike to Mweka Gate. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate—green for those who reached Stella Point and gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak. If the road is too muddy for vehicles, continue to Mweka Village for lunch before being driven back to Moshi. A refreshing hot shower awaits you!
