Budget Gorilla Habituation Experience Safaris

Budget Gorilla Habituation Experience Safaris

Looking for a truly unforgettable African safari experience? The Budget Gorilla Habituation Experience offers an exclusive chance to spend more time with mountain gorillas in the wild. Unlike traditional gorilla trekking, this unique experience allows you to spend four full hours with these incredible creatures in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park—a rare and intimate opportunity.

Why Choose the Gorilla Habituation Experience Over Regular Gorilla Trekking?

While traditional gorilla trekking allows for a one-hour encounter, the Gorilla Habituation Experience gives you much more time to engage with the gorillas. This involves hiking through the lush Bwindi forest with researchers and park rangers to find semi-habituated gorilla families. These groups are still adapting to human presence and your participation helps in their gradual habituation. The experience offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness the gorillas’ natural behaviors in a way that standard trekking simply can’t match.

When is the Best Time for Gorilla Habituation?

Gorilla habituation is possible year-round but the best time to visit is during the drier months of January, February, June and early September. The drier weather makes travel easier and offers clearer views of the gorillas since the vegetation is less dense. However, some travelers prefer the rainy season for its lush surroundings and it’s easier to spot gorillas as they tend to stay closer to their food sources.

How Much Does the Gorilla Habituation Experience Cost?

The cost of a Budget Gorilla Habituation Experience Safari depends on the type of travel package you choose—whether it’s budget, mid-range or luxury, as well as the duration of your stay. Below is an example of a 3-day Gorilla Habituation Safari:

• Solo traveler: USD 3000
• 2 people sharing: USD 2490 per person
• 3 people sharing: USD 2470 per person
• 4 people sharing: USD 2450 per person

This price includes:

• Gorilla Habituation Permit
• Accommodation (budget range)
• Transport in a 4×4 safari van
• English-speaking driver-guide
• Drinking water

Please note that tips, Uganda visas, flights and alcoholic beverages are not included.

How to Book Your Gorilla Habituation Experience Safari

The first step to booking your Budget Gorilla Habituation Safari is securing a Gorilla Habituation Permit, which costs USD 1500 per person. You can only obtain this permit through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Here’s how we can assist you:

1. Select your travel dates: Once you know when you plan to visit, contact us and we will check availability for your desired dates.
2. Secure your permit: After confirming availability, we will make the booking for you and you’ll receive an invoice for payment.
3. Payment confirmation: Once payment is made, you’ll send us proof and we will proceed to finalize your permit purchase.
4. Permit issued: After securing the permit, we’ll send you a scanned copy for your records.

Since there are only two semi-habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi and a very limited number of permits (just 8 available per day), it’s advisable to book your safari 3-5 months in advance to avoid missing out.

Where to Stay During Your Gorilla Habituation Safari

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is only available in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, specifically between the Rushaga and Nkuringo regions. Some popular accommodations in these areas include:

• Rushaga Sector: Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Four Gorillas Lodge, Gorilla Valley Lodge, Icumbi Gorilla Safari Lodge.
• Nkuringo Sector: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Lake Mutanda Resort.

These lodges are conveniently located near the starting points of the Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Getting to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

You can easily reach Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park from Entebbe International Airport. From there, you can either take a 9-10 hour road trip to southwestern Uganda or fly to Kisoro Airstrip or Kihihi Airstrip, which are closer to the park. Alternatively, you can fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and take a 4-5 hour drive to Bwindi via the Cyanika or Katuna border.

We also recommend acquiring the East African Visa, which covers multiple entries into Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. The visa costs USD 100 and is more cost-effective than purchasing individual country visas.
