About Buhoma Sector
Buhoma, located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is the first sector where gorilla habituation began in 1993. It remains the most famous and most visited sector in the park. Buhoma is home to Mubare, the oldest habituated gorilla family, along with three other families: Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Katwe.
Buhoma attracts visitors throughout the year, even during the low season, due to its reputation as a prime location for gorilla trekking. It’s also where the very first gorilla trekking activities took place, giving travelers confidence they will encounter gorillas here. The sector’s accessibility, with luxurious accommodation options, makes it a favorite choice for many safari-goers.
Key Considerations for Planning Your Buhoma Gorilla Trekking Trip
Book Your Gorilla Permits in Advance
To trek gorillas in Buhoma, you’ll need a permit. It’s essential to book your permit at least 3 to 4 months ahead of your trip, especially during high season, when permits sell out quickly.
- Permit Pricing:
- USD 800 for Foreign Non-Residents
- USD 700 for Foreign Residents
- 300,000 UGX for East African Citizens
These permits allow you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Contact us for assistance with booking your gorilla permit in advance.
Traveling to Buhoma
To make your journey to Buhoma more comfortable, we recommend traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser. Alternatively, you can fly to Kihihi Airstrip, which is about a 1-hour drive to Buhoma. This option reduces the long 8-9 hour road trip from Entebbe/Kampala.
What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking
Wondering what to wear during your trek in Buhoma? Here’s a quick guide:
- Long-sleeve sweater for cooler weather
- Two pairs of long trousers for protection during the trek
- Waterproof hiking boots for muddy trails
- Hat and sunglasses (optional, depending on weather)
- Camera with extra batteries (no flash photography)
- Binoculars to spot birds and other wildlife
- Gardening gloves for gripping branches and trees
- Raincoat to be prepared for the unpredictable rain
- Mosquito repellent to protect from insects
- Sunscreen (optional, but useful on sunny days)
- Neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright colors, as they can disturb gorillas)
How to Get to Buhoma
- By Air: Fly with Aerolink to Kihihi Airstrip, followed by a 1-hour road transfer to your lodge in Buhoma. Check-in is required 90 minutes before departure, and luggage is limited to 15kg per person (extra charges apply).
- By Road: From Entebbe/Kampala, it’s an 8-9 hour drive to Buhoma. Alternatively, Buhoma can be reached from Kigali, Rwanda, in about 4-5 hours.
