Where to Go for End-of-Year Gorilla Trekking in Africa?
The mountain gorilla, found only in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a symbol of Africa’s natural beauty. The four national parks that protect these incredible creatures include:
- Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
- Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
- Congo: Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas) and Kahuzi Beiga National Park (Lowland Gorillas)
To trek in any of these parks, you’ll need a gorilla permit, which can sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons like December. For the best experience, we recommend booking your trek at least five months in advance. Gorilla Permit Pricing for Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo
- Uganda: Gorilla permits in Uganda cost:
- $800 per person for Foreign non-residents
- $700 for residents
- $80 for East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan) This allows you to spend one hour with the gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga. For a more immersive experience, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience for $1,500 per person, which gives you up to four hours with the gorillas in Bwindi.
- Rwanda: Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost:
- $1,500 per person for Foreign non-residents
- $500 for foreign residents
- $200 for East African citizens In Rwanda, you can spend one hour with the gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.
- Congo: Gorilla permits in Congo are:
- $400 per person for Virunga National Park during peak season (Mid-December to mid-March and June to October) and $200 during low season (mid-March to mid-May and mid-October to mid-December).
- In Kahuzi Beiga National Park, permits cost $400 for foreign non-residents, $200 for East African residents, and $20 for national residents.

Best Time to Book Your End-of-Year Gorilla Trekking
To ensure you secure your gorilla trekking experience, it’s best to book your trip at least three months in advance, especially if you’re planning to travel during peak seasons like the end of the year. We recommend booking your trip even earlier to avoid disappointment. If you’re ready to reserve your trek, send us your preferred travel dates, and we’ll check availability for permits and services.
Once we confirm availability, you’ll be asked to make a payment for your gorilla permit. Excursia Adventures operates a Dollar account, and we accept payment via bank transfer, wire transfer, or debit/credit card (which may attract a small surcharge). After payment, we’ll secure your permits and send you the confirmation receipt.
