Mgahinga National Park Gorilla Treks

Mgahinga National Park Gorilla Treks: Your Ultimate Guide

If you’re planning a trip to Uganda for a gorilla trekking adventure, a visit to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is an experience you don’t want to miss. Located in the far southwest of Uganda, Mgahinga shares borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This park is one of the best places to see mountain gorillas, as part of the Virunga Volcanoes mountain range that spans Rwanda, Congo and Uganda.

As Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga is home to diverse ecosystems, including tropical rainforests, montane rainforests and mountain bamboo, offering visitors a unique trekking experience. The park is also famous for harboring the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, making it a top destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

What to Expect from Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga

Mgahinga National Park is home to one gorilla family, known as the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group, which is open for daily treks. This family of gorillas is habituated to human presence, offering a rare and exciting opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat.

Unlike Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which has several gorilla families, Mgahinga’s trekking is more intimate with only eight visitors allowed per day. The trek begins early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll receive guidelines on how to behave around the gorillas. Afterward, you’ll set off into the forest with a guide and ranger to search for the gorillas. Once you find them, you’ll have one hour to observe and photograph these magnificent creatures up close.

The Gorilla Trekking Experience

Your day of trekking starts with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll learn about the dos and don’ts while in the forest. Afterward, you’ll head out on the trek, accompanied by experienced guides and park rangers who will lead you through dense forests and steep terrain in search of the gorillas. The journey will reward you with an unforgettable encounter with these incredible creatures, who share about 99% of our DNA.

Once you find the gorillas, you will have the privilege of being within 5 to 7 meters of them, observing their daily activities like feeding, playing and interacting with one another. The experience is truly life-changing. After spending one hour with the gorillas, you’ll return to the park headquarters, where you’ll receive a certificate of completion for your trek.
