Why Stay in Kisoro for Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga
November 15, 2024Gorilla Trekking in Buhoma Section, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Buhoma, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. This section of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a favorite for many travelers due to its relatively gentle terrain, making it an ideal spot for an easier trek compared to other areas of the park. Located in the northern part of Bwindi, Buhoma was the first section to be habituated in 1993, just after Bwindi was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Buhoma is the most famous and frequently visited area of the park, home to the oldest gorilla family, Mubare, as well as three other families: Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Katwe. Gorilla trekking is the main attraction here, offering you a rare chance to observe these majestic creatures up close in their natural habitat.
But there’s more to do in the Buhoma region than just gorilla trekking. Below are some exciting activities you can enjoy during your stay:
1. Batwa Cultural Experience
Take a step back in time with the Batwa Cultural Experience. Guided by one of the Batwa people, this tour gives you insight into the traditional forest life of the Batwa, the indigenous people who once lived in Bwindi Forest. Learn about their fascinating history, watch traditional dances, and even participate in activities like fire-making—skills passed down through generations.
2. Gorilla Health and Research
At the Gorilla Conservation Camp, managed by Conservation Through Public Health, you can take part in gorilla health monitoring activities. This program trains park staff and community volunteers in human-gorilla conflict resolution and conservation efforts. It’s a fantastic way to understand how these efforts are contributing to the survival of the mountain gorillas. You might even get the chance to dine with gorilla doctors and learn about their vital work in protecting this endangered species.
3. Cultural Experience at Ride 4 a Woman
While staying at Ride 4 a Woman, you can engage in a hands-on cultural experience with the Bakiga tribe. Learn how to prepare traditional dishes, enjoy local fruits, and savor your creations in the peaceful surroundings of Bwindi’s misty hills. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community and experience life in this remote area.
4. Nature Walks
For nature lovers, a nature walk in Bwindi Forest is a must. Explore the rich biodiversity of the forest, discovering various tree species and encountering other wildlife. The River Ivi-Nkuringo trail offers a scenic experience, where you can enjoy the sound of a beautiful waterfall plunging 33 meters.
5. Safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park (Ishasha and Mweya)
While in Buhoma, you’re perfectly positioned to explore the nearby Queen Elizabeth National Park. Take a safari in both the Ishasha and Mweya sections for exciting wildlife viewing and game drives. It’s a great way to extend your trip and enjoy Uganda’s diverse wildlife.
6. Birding
Bwindi is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 350 bird species recorded in the park. The Buhoma Waterfall Trail and the bamboo zone are particularly popular birding areas. Make sure to bring a birding guidebook to identify the many species you might encounter—some may even visit the gardens of your lodge!
7. Community Visits and Other Activities
Explore the local villages surrounding Bwindi and gain insight into the lives of the Bakiga and Batwa people. Additionally, there are several other activities to enjoy in the area, such as:
- Yoga sessions at your lodge for relaxation after trekking.
- Mountain biking through the scenic landscapes of Bwindi.
- Volunteering with local schools and community projects.
- Butterfly watching at night, an enchanting experience for nature enthusiasts.
