How to Check the Availability of Gorilla Permits in Uganda
Before booking your gorilla trek, it’s essential to confirm the availability of permits to avoid disappointment. You can check for available permits through a tour operator or directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). By contacting either of these, you can find out which dates have permits available for trekking at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, allowing you to book your trek accordingly.
Checking Gorilla Permit Availability Online
To ensure you’re booking your trek during available dates, it’s recommended to check the availability of permits online before making a reservation. This can be done through a booking system managed by UWA, which only tour operators in Uganda can access. How to Book and Purchase Gorilla Permits
Once you’ve confirmed availability, the next step is to book your gorilla permits. This can be done through a tour operator in Uganda, who can either partially reserve the permit or allow you to pay the full amount upfront. Gorilla permits are only sold directly through UWA headquarters, and due to their high demand, it’s advisable to secure your permit at least 2-3 months in advance.
If you’re booking at the last minute, depending on availability, it’s still possible to purchase permits close to your travel date.
Do You Own the Gorilla Permit After Purchase?
Once you’ve paid for your gorilla permit, you’ll receive a receipt with a booking ID, which is used to check in for your trek. The permit itself isn’t given to you until a week before your trek date. If you book through a tour operator, they’ll provide you with a scanned copy of the receipt as confirmation. After your trek, you’ll leave the physical permit with the authorities at UWA, where it will be reused for future treks.
How Long Is a Gorilla Permit Valid?
A gorilla permit remains valid from the time of purchase until your trek date. Once that date has passed, the permit becomes invalid. Cost of Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda
The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda varies depending on your residency:
- USD 800 per person for Foreign Non-Residents
- USD 700 for East African Residents
- USD 80 for East African Citizens
This permit grants you one hour with the gorillas during your trek.

By Air: You can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala’s Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro (for the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors) or Kihihi (for the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors). From there, you’ll need a transfer to your lodge.
