Meet the Gorilla Families of Ruhija
Bitukura Gorilla Family
The Bitukura Gorilla Family is located on the eastern side of Bwindi, near a river that the group was first sighted by rangers. The group began its habituation in 2007 and was opened for tracking in 2008. This peaceful group, led by the gentle silverback Ndahura, is one of the most accessible and relaxed families to track. While initially made up of 24 members, the group now consists of 14 members, including 4 silverbacks, 4 adult females, 3 juveniles, and 1 infant. The group’s calm nature makes it a favorite for those looking for a more serene trekking experience.
Oruzogo Gorilla Family
First opened for tracking in 2011, the Oruzogo Gorilla Family is one of the largest in the Ruhija sector, with 17 members today, including one silverback named Tibirikwata. Known for their playful nature, the Oruzogo family became famous in 2013 when they welcomed a set of twin infants. This group is a joy to observe due to their lively interactions, and it offers a memorable experience for those looking to track gorillas in the wild.
Kyaguriro Gorilla Family
The Kyaguriro Gorilla Family is primarily used for research and habituation, making it a unique option for researchers and those with a keen interest in gorilla behavior. Originally composed of 20 members, the group was led by the silverback Rukina, who tragically passed away after being struck by lightning. After Rukina’s death, the group split into two, Kyaguriro A and Kyaguriro B, with both groups continuing to thrive under new leadership.
