Where to Go for New Year’s Gorilla Trekking in Africa?
Gorilla trekking takes place in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These three countries host the only remaining mountain gorillas, found in four national parks:
- Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
- Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
- Congo: Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas) & Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Eastern Lowland Gorillas)
A gorilla permit is required for trekking in any of these national parks. Given the high demand during peak seasons (June to September and December to February), we advise booking at least five months in advance. Gorilla Permit Costs & How to Get One
Uganda Gorilla Permits
- Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person
- Foreign Residents: $700 per person
- East African Citizens: $80 per person
- Gorilla Habituation Experience: $1,500 per person (4-hour encounter with researchers and gorillas)
Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla families, with permits available daily. Permits can be booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or via a trusted tour operator like Excursia Adventures.
Rwanda Gorilla Permits
- Foreign Non-Residents: $1,500 per person
- Foreign Residents: $500 per person
- East African Citizens: $200 per person
Rwanda has 12 gorilla families, with 96 trekking permits issued per day. Permits can be booked through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or a reliable tour operator like Excursia Adventures.
Congo Gorilla Permits
- Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas)
- High Season: $400 per person (Mid-Dec to Mid-March & June to Oct)
- Low Season: $200 per person (Mid-March to Mid-May & Mid-Oct to Mid-Dec)
- Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Lowland Gorillas)

Best Time to Book Your New Year’s Gorilla Trekking Safari
The best time to secure your New Year’s gorilla trek is at least three months before your trip. However, since gorilla permits are limited, we highly recommend booking six months to a year in advance to avoid disappointment.
