Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in June: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure

Planning a trip to Africa to see the majestic mountain gorillas? Consider Rwanda gorilla trekking in June, an unforgettable wildlife experience in Volcanoes National Park. Known for its incredible biodiversity, Rwanda is home to some of the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world. Trekking through the lush landscapes of Volcanoes National Park to see these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat is truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Explore Volcanoes National Park: Home of the Mountain Gorillas

Volcanoes National Park is located in the northwestern region of Rwanda, in the town of Musanze. The park is famous for being home to the endangered mountain gorillas and is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which spans across Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park itself is surrounded by five extinct volcanoes: Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi and Bisoke.

Volcanoes National Park is not just a haven for gorillas but also boasts diverse wildlife, including golden monkeys, forest hogs and a variety of bird species. Gorilla trekking here offers a rare opportunity to witness these incredible primates up close in their natural environment, making it one of the most sought-after safari experiences in Africa.

Gorilla Permits: Daily Availability and Trekking Details

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a limited activity to protect the gorillas and their habitat. Each day, only 10 gorilla families are available for trekking and each family can accommodate 8 visitors. This means 80 gorilla permits are available per day. The chances of seeing gorillas are exceptionally high (about 99%), thanks to experienced trackers, park rangers and guides who ensure a smooth trekking experience.

Trekking starts early in the morning, with a briefing at 7:00 AM in Kinigi. The hike to the gorillas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on where the gorillas are located in the forest. The terrain can be steep and slippery, especially after rain and the altitude can be challenging, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

Rwanda Gorilla Permit Costs: What You Need to Know

For Rwanda gorilla trekking in June, the cost of a gorilla permit is USD $1,500 per person. This fee covers the entire experience, including a one-hour visit with the gorillas and a chance to take photos. Though the cost is high, the experience is worth every penny, as it offers an intimate and rare opportunity to witness these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.
