About Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

Located in southern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park shares a border with Congo. It’s one of the world’s only two places where you can trek and see the majestic mountain gorillas in the wild. The park is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it the perfect destination for gorilla trekking.

Bwindi is divided into several sectors, each offering a unique trekking experience: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. Each sector is home to a number of habituated gorilla families, led by a dominant male gorilla, known as the silverback. Only 8 visitors are allowed to trek per gorilla family each day, making gorilla permits essential for your trek. Be sure to secure your permit in advance, as they are in high demand!

Cost of Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

The cost of gorilla trekking includes your transportation, accommodation, gorilla permit, and guide fees. Trekking starts early, with a briefing at 7:00 AM on the do’s and don’ts in the park. After the briefing, you’ll embark on your trek with the help of experienced guides and rangers. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll have one hour to observe them in their natural environment before returning to the starting point to receive a certificate of completion.

Each trekking day is limited to 8 people per habituated gorilla family to help with conservation efforts. For this reason, it’s important to book your permits in advance. You must also be at least 15 years old to participate in gorilla trekking—this policy is in place to ensure the safety of both trekkers and the gorillas, and to prevent the transmission of diseases.

Cost of Gorilla Permits

Gorilla permits are an essential part of planning your trip to Bwindi. The cost of a permit depends on your residency status:

• Non-foreign residents: USD 800 per person
• Foreign residents: USD 700 per person
• East African citizens: UGX 300,000 per person

If you opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, you’ll have the chance to spend up to four hours with the gorillas, observing their behavior and lifestyle. The habituation permit costs:

• Non-foreign residents: USD 1500 per person
• Foreign residents: USD 1000 per person
• East African citizens: UGX 750,000 per person

While permits for Bwindi are available year-round, they can sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (January, February, July, August, September, and December). Once you share your preferred dates with us, we’ll check the availability of permits through the Uganda Wildlife Authority online system. If permits are available, we’ll send you an invoice for payment. After we confirm payment, we’ll secure your permits and send you a confirmation receipt.
