About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Located in the southern part of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park shares a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of only two parks in the world where you can trek and view the magnificent mountain gorillas in the wild. Bwindi is home to more than half of the remaining mountain gorillas on Earth, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Bwindi is divided into several sectors for gorilla trekking, including Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. Each sector has its own group of habituated gorilla families, with a dominant silverback male leading each family. A limited number of visitors (8 people per family per day) are allowed to trek to ensure minimal disturbance to the gorillas and their natural environment.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: What to Expect

Bwindi is divided into four main trekking regions: Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. The trekking experience begins at 7:00 AM with a briefing from park guides on the dos and don’ts of trekking and interacting with the gorillas. After the briefing, park guides, rangers, and trackers will lead you through the forest in search of the gorillas. Once you find them, you’ll have one hour to observe them in their natural habitat before returning to the starting point.

Gorillas share 95% of our DNA, making them incredibly fascinating to watch. Keep in mind that only eight visitors per family per day are allowed to participate in the trek, ensuring a more intimate and controlled experience. Visitors must be 15 years or older to participate, in accordance with Uganda Wildlife Authority policies.

The cost of transportation to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park includes fuel, vehicle hire, and driver-guide fees. Transportation costs typically range from USD 150 per day per person, and fuel for the round trip can cost around USD 280. The driver-guide allowance is generally USD 50 per day, and prices may vary depending on your additional destinations.
