Concerned about safety while trekking in the jungle to see these magnificent creatures in their natural environment? Rest assured, Bwindi is a safe and incredible destination for gorilla trekking, offering you the chance to see half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Prepare for the ultimate adventure!
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: A Prime Gorilla Trekking Destination
Nestled in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park shares a border with the Congo and is one of only two places in the world where you can trek to see mountain gorillas in the wild. The park is home to over half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas, making it a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is one of Africa’s oldest forests and offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness these incredible creatures up close. Gorilla trekking is conducted in four sectors of the park: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. While each sector offers a unique experience, all are equally captivating.
With a 98% success rate for spotting the gorillas, Bwindi guarantees an unforgettable trek. There are 18 habituated gorilla families within the park, and each family is assigned a maximum of 8 visitors per day. This allows for a personalized, intimate encounter with these gentle giants year-round.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: A Life-Changing Experience
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi begins early, with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll learn about the dos and don’ts for safely trekking in the forest and interacting with the gorillas. The trek starts at 7:00 AM, and you’ll be guided by park rangers and trackers who know the terrain and gorilla families well.
Once the gorillas are located, you’ll be allowed to observe them for up to one hour. This close-up experience is nothing short of magical, as gorillas share 95% of human DNA. It’s a rare and moving opportunity to witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. After your encounter, you’ll return to the starting point, where you’ll receive a certificate commemorating your successful gorilla trek.
To maintain the safety and well-being of the gorillas, only 8 visitors are allowed to visit each habituated family per day. Additionally, trekkers must be 15 years or older, as young children can be more difficult to control in the forest and pose a risk of transmitting diseases to the gorillas. Rest assured, Bwindi National Park has strict policies and guidelines in place to ensure both your safety and the conservation of the gorillas.
