About Gorilla Permits: What’s Included?

A gorilla permit is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and allows you to spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. The permit also includes park entry fees and the services of a ranger guide and a tourism police officer, ensuring your safety in the forest. The guide will carry a weapon (usually an AK-47) to protect the group from any potential danger from stray animals, though gorilla trekking is generally very safe.

Your gorilla permit also covers park entry fees for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park and is valid for 24 hours from the time of entry. This means your permit is valid only on the day of your trek, so be sure to be available on that day.

While you’re with the gorillas, you’ll have the chance to take photos and videos, though be mindful of the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. Your guide will also share interesting insights and facts about the gorillas and their habitat, making this a truly educational experience.

Gorilla Habituation Permit: What’s Included and Excluded

If you’re looking for a more immersive gorilla experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience Permit is the perfect choice. Unlike the standard gorilla trekking permit, which allows you to spend just one hour with the gorillas, the habituation permit lets you spend up to four hours with mountain gorillas still under habituation in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This unique opportunity allows you to learn more about the gorillas’ behavior and witness their daily activities in greater detail.

Currently, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has designated two gorilla families in the southern part of Bwindi for the habituation experience. There are also unconfirmed reports of another family being habituated in the northern section of the park to serve visitors staying in the Buhoma and Ruhija areas.

As part of the Gorilla Habituation Experience, you’ll receive a certificate confirming your participation, and your permit fee will contribute directly to gorilla conservation efforts and community development in the region. The revenue from permits helps support local communities by funding projects such as schools, hospitals, and job creation, as well as supporting the Uganda Wildlife Authority staff.
