Rushaga, located in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is home to the highest number of habituated mountain gorilla families in the park. With five fully habituated families—Busingye, Bweza, Nshongi, Mishaya, and Kahungye—Rushaga offers one of the best gorilla trekking experiences in Uganda.

Thanks to its relatively open terrain, trekking in Rushaga is often considered easier compared to other sectors of Bwindi. It is also the most accessible tracking point for travelers coming from Kigali, Rwanda. Additionally, Rushaga is the only sector in Bwindi that offers the unique Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors can spend extended time with gorillas in the semi-habituation process. The two families currently undergoing habituation are Bushaho and Bikyingi.

Nshongi Gorilla Family

Previously the largest gorilla family in Bwindi, Nshongi once had 36 members before splitting into new groups, including Bweza and Mishaya. Today, it consists of 25 members, led by the dominant silverback Nshongi, alongside three other silverbacks, four blackbacks, seven adult females, six juveniles, and four infants. This playful and lively group offers a thrilling trekking experience.

Mishaya Gorilla Family

Formed in 2010 when the silverback Mishaya broke away from Nshongi, this group originally had only seven members. Over the years, it has grown to 12 members, including three infants. Known for its aggressive nature, this group has expanded by attracting new members through confrontations with other families.

Bweza Gorilla Family

Another breakaway group from Nshongi, Bweza was formed in 2013 with eight members. Despite attempts by park authorities to reunite it with Nshongi, the group remained separate and was officially opened for trekking. Today, it includes one silverback, several females, juveniles, and two infants. Bweza is one of the most entertaining groups to observe, offering visitors an up-close experience of daily gorilla activities.

Kahungye Gorilla Family

Habituated in 2011, Kahungye originally had 27 members, but soon after, a split led to the formation of the Busingye group. The family now consists of 13 members, including the dominant silverback Rumansi, two blackbacks (Rwigi and Ruhamuka), and several females and juveniles.

Busingye Gorilla Family

Formed in 2012 after splitting from Kahungye, this group is named after its leader, Busingye, which means “peace.” Ironically, Busingye is known for his confrontational nature, often taking females from other groups to expand his own. The group started with seven members and has now grown to eight.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi requires proper preparation, as it involves hiking through steep, muddy trails with unpredictable weather conditions. Here’s what you should pack:

• Hiking Boots: Sturdy, waterproof boots for navigating rough terrain.
• Long-Sleeved Shirts & Trousers: Protection against stinging nettles and insects.
• Light Rain Jacket or Poncho: Essential due to Bwindi’s unpredictable rain.
• Gardening Gloves: Useful for gripping vegetation and protecting hands.
• Waterproof Backpack: To carry essentials such as a camera, snacks, and extra clothing.
• Drinking Water & Snacks: At least two liters of water for hydration.
• Sunscreen, Hat & Sunglasses: Necessary for sun protection, especially during the dry season.

These months receive less rainfall, making the trails less slippery and trekking easier.
