Gorilla trekking times can vary greatly depending on where the gorillas are on the day of your trek. Since gorillas move continuously through the forest, the duration and difficulty of your trek depend on their location. Be prepared for unpredictable weather, which can change at a moment’s notice, and challenging terrain, often steep with no marked paths. The trek can last anywhere from a few hours to a full day, with hikes lasting up to 8 hours or more, especially in high-altitude, hot conditions. To ensure you’re prepared, it’s important to be in good physical condition.
On average, trekking to find the gorillas can take up to 9 miles (around 3 hours), making the total hike about 6 hours, starting at 8 AM and typically concluding by 3 PM. However, it’s important to note that the trek may extend into the full day, depending on the gorillas’ movements and the terrain that day.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of just four national parks in the world that is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. The other parks are Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Africa’s oldest forests, hosting an incredible biodiversity of over 350 bird species, 310 butterfly species, 200 types of trees, 51 reptiles, 88 moths, and 120 mammals. Bwindi is also home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, with a population of around 1,064 individuals. Bwindi has over 15 habituated gorilla families open for trekking, with 8 permits available for each family per day.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi takes place in four sectors: Buhoma (north), Ruhija (northeast), Nkuringo (south), and Rushaga (south). The Buhoma and Ruhija sectors are located close to Queen Elizabeth National Park, which makes it easy to combine gorilla trekking with game viewing. Rushaga and Nkuringo are located near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, offering opportunities for both gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking. Rushaga is particularly known for having the highest number of habituated gorilla families, increasing the chances of securing a permit.
This permit grants you a one-hour encounter with the mountain gorillas after finding them during your trek.
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is offered in the southern part of Bwindi, particularly at the Rushaga sector, and between Rushaga and Nkuringo. This experience allows you to spend up to 4 hours with semi-habituated mountain gorillas, during which you can participate in activities that help the gorillas become accustomed to human presence. This is a more immersive experience compared to regular trekking, which typically lasts just one hour. Due to its high demand, only 4 permits are available per day, so it’s advisable to book your permit 2-3 months in advance.
The key difference lies in the time spent with the gorillas. During regular trekking, you can spend up to one hour with the gorillas, whereas the Habituation Experience allows up to 4 hours. Also, trekking is done in groups of 8 tourists per gorilla family, while the Habituation Experience is limited to just 4 tourists per semi-habituated family. Both activities start early in the morning and require a good level of fitness due to the sometimes strenuous nature of the treks.
The best time to go gorilla trekking is during the drier months of January, February, and from June to early September. These months offer clearer trails and better visibility of the gorillas, as the vegetation is less dense.
Accommodation varies by sector, with options ranging from budget to luxury. In the southern sectors (Rushaga and Nkuringo), options include Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Four Gorillas Lodge, and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge. In the northern sectors (Buhoma and Ruhija), you can stay at Buhoma Lodge, Bwindi Lodge, or Trekkers Tavern Cottages. Most lodges are conveniently located near the trekking start points.
Rushaga is often considered the best sector due to the large number of habituated gorilla families, making it easier to secure a permit. However, Buhoma is also a great option, with shorter treks in some cases. Nkuringo, while offering beautiful views, is the most challenging sector due to its higher elevation.
