Planning a visit to Uganda for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park? Mgahinga is one of the top destinations for gorilla safaris in Uganda, offering a rare opportunity to trek mountain gorillas in the stunning forests of the southwestern part of the country, near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mgahinga National Park is part of the famous Virunga Mountain Range, which spans Rwanda, Congo, and Uganda, and is renowned for its mountain gorillas. This is the smallest national park in Uganda, bordered by Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Mgahinga is home to three volcanic mountains: Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura, which are part of the Virunga range. The park is also known for its lush rainforests, which host both the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga offers a unique experience. The park is home to just one gorilla family, the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group, which is available for trekking. Like in other gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda, it’s essential to book your trek in advance as only 8 permits are available each day. This ensures a more exclusive experience with the gorillas.
The trek typically starts in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll learn the rules and guidelines for gorilla trekking. Afterward, you’ll embark on a thrilling hike through the dense forest, guided by experienced rangers and guides. The search for the gorillas can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on where the family is located.
The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Mgahinga National Park is the same as in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park:
Each permit allows you to spend one hour with the gorillas once you find them. The trek starts early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters, and the experienced guides will lead you through the forest to encounter the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
On the day of your trek, you will need to secure your gorilla permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which is mandatory to participate in the trek. Your gorilla trekking experience will be led by skilled guides and park rangers. After the trek, you’ll receive a certificate marking your successful gorilla encounter.
For a gorilla trek to Mgahinga, you’ll need transportation from Kisoro (the nearest town) or other parts of Uganda. Depending on the type of vehicle, vehicle hire costs range from USD 100–250 per day. For a round trip from Kisoro, expect to spend about USD 290 for transportation.
To get to Mgahinga National Park, you will need an Uganda visa ($30) at Entebbe International Airport or any border point. The park is just a 45-minute drive from Kisoro town, and we use comfortable 4×4 vehicles with air conditioning and bottled water for your journey.
There are several accommodation options available near Mgahinga National Park, catering to all budgets. Many lodges offer fantastic views of the forest and the surrounding volcanic mountains.
Alternatively, many visitors opt to stay in the Rushaga Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is about an hour’s drive from Mgahinga.

After your exhilarating gorilla trek, unwind with a nature walk in Gahinga Forest. This is an excellent opportunity to deepen your understanding of the local flora and fauna. The walk offers a chance to learn about the diverse tree species, wildlife, and the unique ecosystem that thrives in this part of Uganda. It’s a peaceful and informative activity for nature lovers.
Take a stroll through the vibrant Kisoro village and immerse yourself in the local way of life. This walk will introduce you to the daily activities of the Bafumbira and Bakiga tribes, where you’ll visit local markets, experience traditional dances, sample local foods, and admire local arts. It’s a wonderful cultural experience that offers insight into the heart of Uganda’s rural communities.
One of the most exciting activities in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Golden Monkey Tracking. Unlike gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking is unique to Mgahinga. The day starts with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a trek into the forest in search of these endangered monkeys. Golden monkey permits are available for purchase at the park headquarters and offer another fantastic wildlife encounter after your gorilla trek.
If you’re looking for a more immersive experience with the golden monkeys, consider the Golden Monkey Habituation experience. This activity allows you to spend more time with the semi-habituated golden monkeys as you participate in activities designed to help them get accustomed to human presence. Like tracking, this starts in the morning with a briefing, and the permits can be easily obtained on arrival at the park headquarters.
For birding enthusiasts, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the best bird-watching destinations in Uganda.
